The Color of Lunenburg
The Color of Lunenburg

What a brilliantly colorful little town of Nova Scotia. Not long ago the facades of the wood-built buildings in Lunenburg were white with black trim with the only exceptions being the red buildings at the wharf.

That all changed in 2007 when the new owners of the Mariner King Inn decided to repaint their multi-building property in bright colors. They used the colors that sailors used on their boats giving them each a distinct look as they returned from sea. Other property owners then followed giving this town a truly cheerful look and a fun feeling as you walk the hilly streets.

Also note that the water was so still that the reflections are mirror like. This is a true gem of Nova Scotia and I strongly recommend driving to Blue Rocks if you are ever in Lunenburg.

Taking a Break
Taking a Break

This is Paul. Paul is a good friend of mine and he's a contractor in the Lewes and Rehoboth area. I got a call from him today telling me that the surf was up and that he was going to take a break from work and head to the beach. I followed along with my camera and I'm glad I did. The waves were great and the weather was perfect.

Other Crabbers
Other Crabbers

There were six other crab boats on the water during my time with Rick. They each had a two of three man crew but Rick did the entire task himself. I was totally impressed.

Rick's Office
Rick's Office

When he's not busy on deck, Rick is in his office, checking in with other watermen and heading to his next row of crab pots.

Meet Rick
Meet Rick

Rick is a waterman from Hoopers Island who crabs and oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. I first met him back in March of this year when I went to Hoopers Island to do a photoshoot of the area. That day, I met him while he was in his front yard washing his crab pots in preparation of the upcoming season. I asked him at that time If I could spend a day with him while he's out crabbing. Today was that day and, what an interesting day it was. Thanks you so much Rick for giving me this experience.

An Early Starter
An Early Starter

Rick's day begins well before sunrise each. First he must prepare his boat, purchase his bait and still be on the water before the sun comes up. For me to be there on time for my days ride, I had to get up at 3 am so that I could be there before he left the docks. I spent 10 hours with him today and, after seeing how hard he works, I have total respect for what he and other watermen do for a living.

The Puller in Action
The Puller in Action

This is another photograph of the crab pot puller mechanism but, this time it is spinning and kicking off droplets of water. As a professional crabber, the puller is a vital tool in assisting the waterman to get the crab pot off the bottom, out of the mud and up to the side of the boat. He then will quickly pull the line out of the puller prior to it jamming. All of this happens in just about 15 seconds or so. And he does all of this while wearing rubber gloves.

The Puller System
The Puller System

Spinning at a good rate of speed and used to pull the crab pots off the bottom and up to the boat. A dangerous looking tool that is a vital part of the job.

Pulling in a Trap
Pulling in a Trap

A very routine job where you do the same series of tasks over and over. Rick did this for ten hours yesterday while also driving his boat through rough seas and dodging other people's traps. It was quite an interesting day.

A Small Payload
A Small Payload

As we started off the morning, the traps were coming up with small numbers of crabs. Rick said that it was due to the winds that we had been experiencing for the past several days. He was hopeful that his other traps would be more bountiful. They were, but still not in the numbers that he likes.

Our Prey
Our Prey

Was the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab. One of the finest creatures that live at the bottom of the sea. Though, as Rick said, "It was an off day", he caught 12 1/2 bushels of these beautiful swimmers.

Leaving Port
Leaving Port

The Crab Boat, otherwise called a Chesapeake Dead Rise Boat, has the controls in both the cabin as well as on the starboard aft side of the boat. These aft controls allow the crabber to operate the boat while pulling in his pots. I was very impressed with the talent needed to manage all these tasks at the same time.

Rehoboth Blue
Rehoboth Blue

My alarm was set for 5:35 this morning but, I got up 10 minutes before it went off. I was excited to head out for a photoshoot at Rehoboth Beach. This was taken at 6:38 am (35 minutes before sunrise) during the "Blue Hour". Off in the distance you can see the work boat all lit up as they work through the night. Note: this was a 22 second exposure and yet the boat work boat is crisp and in focus. This is due to the extremely still water of the ocean.

Standing on Top
Standing on Top

Which I don't recommend... To take this photograph, I stood on top of the jetty structure which can be slippery and, you risk falling and/or getting wet feet. Taken at Rehoboth Beach at sunrise.

Morning Rush
Morning Rush

I enjoy capturing movement in my photography and the best way for me to do this is to shoot moving water at a slow shutter speed. In this image I capture the rush of the water as it was heading back into the ocean after an incoming wave. The trick is to be able to do this without getting wet feet. Though this is considered a long exposure, it was really only 1.5 seconds yet I still caught the movement.

Full Moon of June
Full Moon of June

The Color of Lunenburg

What a brilliantly colorful little town of Nova Scotia. Not long ago the facades of the wood-built buildings in Lunenburg were white with black trim with the only exceptions being the red buildings at the wharf.

That all changed in 2007 when the new owners of the Mariner King Inn decided to repaint their multi-building property in bright colors. They used the colors that sailors used on their boats giving them each a distinct look as they returned from sea. Other property owners then followed giving this town a truly cheerful look and a fun feeling as you walk the hilly streets.

Colorful Harbor

Location, Dingwall, Nova Scotia on a side road along the way. It pays to drive down those not so well worn paths to see what you can see.

Lobster Traps of PEI

During our brief time on Prince Edward Island, we we saw many pleasant farm fields but, often those fields contained lobster traps adding that special touch to the scene.

The Cabot Trail

Oh, such a beautiful part of the world. We took the Cabot Trail on our September 2017 road trip of Nova Scotia. The views were breathtakingly beautiful with the mountains edging along the ocean. There are many hiking trails along the way that provide even more spectacular views.

Nubble Light

Cape Neddick Lighthouse. Located in York, Maine it is one of my favorite lighthouses. I took this photograph on a very overcast day with light rain and a heavy wind.

Bass Harbor Head Light

Located within Acadia National Park in the southwest portion of Mount Desert Island, Maine, marking the entrance to Bass Harbor and Blue Hill Bay.

Cape Breton Yellows

This photograph was taken in one of the numerous harbors along the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. There are lobster boats aplenty...!

Sunset at Indian Harbor

Located just 4 miles from Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, this little gem of a harbor doesn't get the crowds.

Harbor of Blue Rocks

A gem of a find. Located outside of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. It was recommended to me by two locals that I was speaking with and I was so glad I took the time to search it out. I was also thankful for the foggy morning.

Main Sail

I just love the workings of large sailboats. This photograph details the main sail attachment rigs that allow it to freely run up and down the mast. I did this in black & white because it just gives a better touch. I hope you like it as well. Taken in the harbor area of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Morning Calm

I love a foggy morning with my camera. It adds such a mystical touch to my photographs.

Row Row Row Your Boat

Taken at the docks of Camden, Maine. A beautiful little town.

Fog

Many would never consider taking their camera out in the fog but, to me, it is a truly wonderful time for photography. This is one of my favorites from my morning at Blue Rocks. I shot this shed when first heading out but the fog settled in even more so I just had to stop and shoot it again.

Rigging

Taken at the docks of Lunenburg, NS. There is just something about sailboats that is so attractive. With all of their lines, sails and other "Rigging".

Lobster Traps of PEI

During our brief time on Prince Edward Island, we we saw many pleasant farm fields but, often those fields contained lobster traps adding such enjoyment to the scene.

Leading Lady of Lunenburg

During our September 2017 road trip we stayed in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia for three nights. While there the weather was overcast much of the time and, on this particular evening, the fog had rolled in making for some mystical photographs and I took full advantage.

Taut Lines

There's just something so attractive about sailboats with their lines & pulleys in abondance. This is another photograph from the Lunenburg Harbor.

The Bluenose II

One of the main attractions at the docks of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

The Shed

I got up early one morning during our stay in Lunenburg and, based on a tip from a couple of locals, I headed out to Blue Rocks. On the way I found a wonderful little cove and in it was "The Shed". There was a light fog which added to the attractiveness of the scene.

Dry Dock

I'd love to hear the stories that this old lobster boat has to tell. Sitting along the road in Dingwall, Nova Scotia just waiting to be launched again.

MV Defender of Blue Rocks

This is yet another photograph taken during my foggy morning tour of Blue Rocks this past September. It was a wonderfully inspiring morning with my camera.

The Green Dory

I came across this scene as I was driving the Blue Rocks area of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Two men that I met while walking around Lunenburg told me that I needed to take this drive with my camera and I was so glad that I did. It was an overcast morning and the fog was rolling in during my drive time. Take notice of the evergreen tree all decorated with lobster trap buoys. Also note that the water was so still that the reflections are mirror like. This is a true gem of Nova Scotia and I strongly recommend driving to Blue Rocks if you are ever in Lunenburg.

Dorchester Dinghy

I found this is a marina along Hooper's Island Road in Hooper's Island, MD

Merchant Marines Memorial

Sydney, Nova Scotia - A monument dedicated to the memory of a brave contingent of civilians who served Canada on the high seas during two world wars. Located at the Sydney Harbor, I took this photograph on our September 2017 roadtrip.

Known as the merchant navy, these sailors risked their lives every time they boarded a supply ship and headed across the submarine-infested waters of the Atlantic. These merchant ships were routinely sunk by German submarines.

Great Blue in the Morning

This Great Blue Heron was sitting along the shoreline of Blue Rocks. As I was getting closer, it took off and flew over the harbor giving me the opportunity to shoot it in flight.

Moored in Lunenburg

Cove Reflections

So many coves, so many wonderful sights.... Nova Scotia. Taken on our September road trip.

Tyler in Action

One of my surfer friends called this past Monday to tell me that the waves were kicking at the Cape Henlopen State Park's Herring Point. So, I grabbed my camera gear, hopped in my jeep and took off for the park. The action was amazing with numerous surfers enjoying the ride.

Inside the Curl

This is another photograph of Paul from today. The waves were rockin...

Other Crabbers

There were six other crab boats on the water during my time with Rick. They each had a two of three man crew but Rick did the entire task himself. I was totally impressed.

Rick's Office

When he's not busy on deck, Rick is in his office, checking in with other watermen and heading to his next row of crab pots.

Rick's day begins well before sunrise each. First he must prepare his boat, purchase his bait and still be on the water before the sun comes up. For me to be there on time for my days ride, I had to get up at 3 am so that I could be there before he left the docks. I spent 10 hours with him today and, after seeing how hard he works, I have total respect for what he and other watermen do for a living.

The Puller in Action

This is another photograph of the crab pot puller mechanism but, this time it is spinning and kicking off droplets of water. As a professional crabber, the puller is a vital tool in assisting the waterman to get the crab pot off the bottom, out of the mud and up to the side of the boat. He then will quickly pull the line out of the puller prior to it jamming. All of this happens in just about 15 seconds or so. And he does all of this while wearing rubber gloves.

The Puller System

Spinning at a good rate of speed and used to pull the crab pots off the bottom and up to the boat. A dangerous looking tool that is a vital part of the job.

Pulling in a Trap

A very routine job where you do the same series of tasks over and over. Rick did this for ten hours yesterday while also driving his boat through rough seas and dodging other people's traps. It was quite an interesting day.

A Small Payload

As we started off the morning, the traps were coming up with small numbers of crabs. Rick said that it was due to the winds that we had been experiencing for the past several days. He was hopeful that his other traps would be more bountiful. They were, but still not in the numbers that he likes.

Our Prey

Was the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab. One of the finest creatures that live at the bottom of the sea. Though, as Rick said, "It was an off day", he caught 12 1/2 bushels of these beautiful swimmers.

Leaving Port

The Crab Boat, otherwise called a Chesapeake Dead Rise Boat, has the controls in both the cabin as well as on the starboard aft side of the boat. These aft controls allow the crabber to operate the boat while pulling in his pots. I was very impressed with the talent needed to manage all these tasks at the same time.

Yellow Boat

In a harbor of Nova Scotia. September 2017 road trip photograph.

Old Dinghy in the Grasses

I found this forgotten old boat tucked away in the weeds at the King Neptune Campground located in Indian Harbor, Nova Scotia. It was very fitting for the area.

Which I don't recommend... To take this photograph, I stood on top of the jetty structure which can be slippery and, you risk falling and/or getting wet feet. Taken at Rehoboth Beach at sunrise.

Morning Rush

I enjoy capturing movement in my photography and the best way for me to do this is to shoot moving water at a slow shutter speed. In this image I capture the rush of the water as it was heading back into the ocean after an incoming wave. The trick is to be able to do this without getting wet feet. Though this is considered a long exposure, it was really only 1.5 seconds yet I still caught the movement.

Full Moon of June

As it is setting behind a WWII Observation Tower in the Cape Henlopen State Park. Sometimes you get lucky and you spot a beautiful scene and you have your camera at hand... That's what happened to me in the early morning hours of June 2017. I have about 15 images of this scene with the moon in different positions as it is setting. This is one of my favorites.

Waples at Sunset

This is Waples Pond of Southern Delaware as the sun in setting in the west. Notice the three ducks heading out across the water with their wake trailing behind.

I took this photograph while standing "In the Middle" of the storm fencing on Lewes Beach. Taken on a foggy morning.

Breakfast

I was at Lewes Beach shooting photographs of the ice and I happened upon this person feeding the gulls their "breakfast". After posting this photograph on Facebook, a gentleman reached out to give me more of the backstory... It seems that this man comes to Lewes Beach 2 to three times per day to feed the gulls while his wife, who enjoys seeing them and has some medical issues, sits in the van and watches.

Jetty's of Rehoboth

Morning Drama

Sunrise at Herring Point. This is one of the best locations to capture the sunrise in Sussex County Delaware. You can go out there ten days in a row and each day will be different.

Fowlers Beach Road

This was the scene along Fowlers Beach Road this morning as I was out for an early morning photoshoot. Not so long ago this was a thriving stand of trees that are now dead due to the saltwater invasion that had been taking place. Fortunately this has now been corrected and I look forward to seeing the regrowth over time. You can see more of my work at RandyRobertsPhotography.com

The Flats of Prime Hook

Taken along Prime Hook Road about 20 minutes after sunrise. I like how the sun was lighting up the mudding flats.

Lunar Eclipse 2018

Cedar Key Style... I took this photograph as the full moon was setting on January 31st at 7:07 am. I was looking for the best way to capture it when I noticed this crane off in the distance so, I grabbed my camera and went hustling down the beach as fast as I could safely go and I caught this just as the flag was still in the moon. I just loved that the crane was holding a boat that was on its trailer. You can see more of my work at RandyRobertsPhotography.com

The Eclipse & the Sailboat

In this photograph I was trying to get the sailboat and the moon yet I couldn't get the scene without the crane. That's when I realized that I should capture the moon at the end of the crane boom. You can see more of my work at RandyRobertsPhotography.com
